ARO Orbit Pro Espresso WDT Distribution Tool, 53mm to 58mm.
A spirograph for your puck. Three geared arms trace hypotrochoid paths through the grounds: clumps broken, density equalized, bed level. Four spins and you tamp. This is the full Orbit Pro range from ARO Espresso: five basket sizes, black or silver body, and four gear materials, shipped direct from ARO.
How it works
Three gears on sealed ball bearings, each with its own job. The long-arm sweeper whips through compacted clumps. The short-arm scrambler moves the pins laterally to equalize density across the basket. The edge gear works the last few millimeters at the wall. Ten stainless pins at 0.25 mm trace dozens of overlapping paths in a few spins, so the distribution comes from the geometry, not your wrist. Nine neodymium magnets hold the tool to a steel basket for one-handed use; on non-magnetic baskets, use two hands.
Pick your size
58mm for most machines. 55mm for La San Marco and Dalla Corte. 54mm for Breville and Sage Barista. 53mm for La Spaziale and 9Barista. The Cafelat Robot version ships with longer 0.35 mm pins and a tall weighted stand with a catch tray for the Robot's deep baskets. Measure across the top rim of your basket before you buy. Pin depth adjusts with the threaded sleeve and jam nut to suit your basket.
Pick your gears
Plastic. Printed PLA with embedded bearings. Lightest and quietest, the best value; expect faint layer lines.
Silicone. Molded food-grade silicone with embedded bearings. The softest spin and a matte finish. Silver bodies ship with gray silicone gears.
Aluminum. Machined and anodized to match the body. A crisp mechanical feel; the balanced pick.
Brass. Machined solid brass with a matching brass lock ring. The heaviest and smoothest, with a weighted spin and a warm finish against black or silver.
Body and dimensions
Anodized aluminum housing with a satin finish that resists scratches and corrosion. Total height in the stand is 71 mm at the shortest setting. Stand diameter is 76 mm for the 58mm size and 70 mm for the others.
In the box
Orbit Pro mechanism with adjustable pin sleeve. Storage stand (aluminum, or the tall black stand on the Robot version). 20 pins in two storage tubes. Brass lock ring with the brass gear option.
Setup
Seat ten pins in the gear holes; rotate the gears or remove the sleeve for access. The tips are flat but still sharp. With the basket empty, set pin height with the sleeve and lock it with the jam nut. Dose, set the tool on the basket with the white-ringed pin hole toward the outer edge, spin three or four times, tap the portafilter to settle the bed, one slow final spin, lift, tamp.
Care
Brush off grounds daily. For a deeper clean, remove the pins, sleeve and lock nut and wipe the mechanism with a damp cloth, keeping water out of the bearings. Pins, sleeve, nut and stand hand-wash in warm soapy water; dry immediately. Not dishwasher safe. Keep the plastic-gear version away from heat; do not store it on top of the machine.
