ARO Auto-Level Espresso Tamper, Self-Leveling Single Spring, 54mm and 58mm.
A leveling tamper that still lets you feel the puck. A single light spring in the sleeve keeps the foot square to the basket while your hand supplies the pressure, which is the opposite of the calibrated, multi-stage tampers that click and take the feedback away. Level matters more than force; a tilted puck channels down one side no matter how hard you press. Stainless foot, anodized aluminum handle, black or silver, 54mm or 58mm. Shipped direct from ARO Espresso.
Two sleeves in the box
Flat basket sleeve for tamping on a bare basket rim.
Flared funnel sleeve that mates with the PortaFunnel PortaStack Edition, so the tamper centers and levels itself inside the funnel before the foot touches loose grounds. Swap sleeves by unscrewing the handle from the foot; hold the foot with a towel.
What you feel
The sleeve rides on a food-safe tribo-polymer bushing, so there is no metal-on-metal scrape. A friction gasket inside the bushing lets the downstroke move freely and slows the return so it does not spring back with a click; remove it if you prefer a faster return. The foot's outer wall is cut back and the edge kept sharp to reduce suction on the lift, and the face is brushed to hide wear.
Handle
Contoured aluminum sized for palm tamping, with a flared lip as a finger rest for a traditional grip. A mirror-polished stainless shaft joins handle to foot.
Technique
Set the tamper down, let the sleeve square it, press until the puck stops compressing, lift straight up.
Care
Wipe the foot after each shot. Hand-wash when needed; dry the shaft and sleeve completely.
