How it works

Three gears, each with a job. The long-arm sweeper whips through clumps, the short-arm scrambler moves pins laterally to even out density, and the edge gear works the last few millimeters at the wall. The pins trace dozens of overlapping hypotrochoid paths in three or four spins, so the distribution comes from the mechanism rather than your wrist. Pin height adjusts with a threaded sleeve and jam nut to suit any basket depth.

Pick your sleeve

Magnetic. Three neodymium magnets hold the tool on a steel basket for one-handed use, and it self-aligns. The right choice if your basket attracts a magnet, and the only choice for 58mm portafilters with three ears.
Standard. Tabbed cutouts locate around the portafilter ears. Two hands, one to hold and one to spin. Fits two-ear 58mm portafilters and Breville and Sage 54mm.

Pick your size

58mm for most machines. 54mm for Breville and Sage Barista. 53mm for La Spaziale. Measure across the top rim of your basket before you buy.

Setup and use

Seat ten pins in the gear holes, rotating the gears or removing the sleeve for access. The tips are flat but still sharp. With the basket empty, set pin height with the sleeve and lock the jam nut. Dose, set the tool on the basket with the white-ringed pin hole toward the outer edge, spin three or four times, tap the portafilter to settle the bed, one slow final spin, lift, tamp.

Care

Brush off grounds daily. Pins, sleeve, nut and stand hand-wash in warm soapy water and dry immediately. Not dishwasher safe. PLA softens with heat, so keep it off the top of the machine. Spare pins are sold separately; 0.35 mm pins are a tight fit in the plastic gears.
